Grandson, nearly 7 is over this afternoon. School Cross Country is over and the children have the rest of the day off.

To fill in the rest of the afternoon he wanted to come over here and watch The Wizard of Oz.

"The first part of the movie is in black and white" he tells me as he watches, "because it was made in the Olden Days. Way back when you were a little girl aye..."

GASP!!!!

My children have long held the view that when I was a child - which was, like, 150-200 years ago - sailing ships plied the seas, the fork had yet to be invented, and Mankind dreamt that one day there would be manned flight, like the birds, only engines - probably steam engines, but possibly using some newer motive force, like electricity - would provide the power.

My only consolation is that one day the children of my children will look at them and say:

"Do you know, when they were children nearly everyone smoked tobacco, which gave them no pleasure, and eventually killed them.  And they drove about in things called "cars", which also killed them.  And all the men wore highly-coloured strips of cloth called "ties" around their necks!  Voluntarily!  Can you imagine it?  Hahahahahahahahaha!"

Your comment reminds me of a book called "The Glideway".  I'll be dropping it off with you one day soon, so if you haven't read it and would like to, you'll have a chance then.

What is it about?

"For young mother Venna, heroine of The Glideway, it's roads and motor cars that are only in story books. With her partner Tim and daughter Grace, she lives in a very different Wellington from the one we might know. It's a seemingly ideal city with no crime, poverty or pollution, let alone traffic congestion. Glides take people wherever they want to go"
